The Most Important Thing in Life

by Brockwell Bone
What is the most important thing in life to you? Is it money? A secure job? Last month, I left Lake Geneva and moved our business to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This time away from Lake Geneva has re-enforced what I already knew – family is the most important thing in life.

As entrepreneurs and small business owners, we tend to spend a lot of time at work, thinking about work, reading about work, or developing our work. Do we neglect our family – yes, at times we miss out on some family time and activities.

I picked up a great method to the work-family balance from somewhere (not sure of the original source so if it was you, do not sue me). When planning your week, block time specifically for family, just as you would an appointment with your biggest client. If someone requests an appointment at that time, tell them you are already booked but the following day at that time would work. If you have to leave the office early for family time and a phone call comes through, tell them that you are leaving for an appointment. Keep your appointment with your family just as you would a hot prospect.

This method appeals to the entrepreneurial mind mixing family into our weekly schedules. Stick to it and you will have the best of both worlds.

How else can you make the time with your family more valuable? How about turning off your cell phone during that time? What do you do when spending family time together?
